Alaskan Malamute

alaskan malamute

The Alaskan Malamute was originally developed for use as a sleddog, but today they are more common as a family pet or show dog. The can no longer compete with the mixed-breed Alaskan Husky in long distance dogsled racing, although they are still used for recreational mushing.

This breed is very strong, intelligent and hardworking, and possesses what some would consider, an "attitude". He is gentle by nature, a devoted companion, loyal and friendly, but very demanding of attention. They expect a lot of their owners. And they are known to be always ready to scrap with other dogs.

Some important things to consider if you are serious about owning this breed. The dog should not be kept in hot and humid environments. It needs daily vigorous exercise with a good sized yard to run around in. It's thick coat needs to be well brushed daily and it's nails need to be kept cut. Socialization is imperative because of it's size, strength and intelligence.

This strong compact working dog stands about 2 feet high and weighs between 70 and 85 pounds. But without proper exercise and a controlled diet, they will become overweight.
