American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is often confused with the American Pit Bull Terrier. This dog was originally bred to protect property, drive cattle, and to hunt bear, wild boar, raccoon, and squirrel. This breed arrived in the southern part of the United States with immigrants from England.

The American Bulldog was close to extinction at the end of WWII, but breeders John Johnson and Allen Scott successfully revived the breed by using top-notch dogs found during trips to the backwoods in the South. Today this massive dog is used, largely in the American South and West, to capture escaped pigs or to hunt razorbacks. Walt Disney featured an American Bulldog in their Homeward Bound series.

This is a brave and determined breed, often showing heroic protection of their master. Although not hostile, they do possess strong protective instincts. They are very obedient, immediately responding to the commands of their master.

This dog needs to be socialized early as well as obedience trained. They love children, and need to be around people to remain content. Most are somewhat aloof around strangers, and assertive around other dogs. They do slobber and drool.

The American Bulldog is an athletic dog that possesses great strength and agility. This dog needs moderate exercise to remain healthy. Most get along okay in an apartment, as long as they have an average sized yard for recreation. All have outstanding leaping ability, with reported leaps of over 6 feet high not uncommon.

Their short, harsh coat is seen in brindle, brown, red, tan or varying degrees of white. This breed is an average shedder, and only needs regular brushing for proper coat maintenance. This breed strikes an imposing picture with its muscular hind quarters, massive head, and boxy muzzle.

This dog generally stands between 20 and 28 inches, and weighs between 60 and 120 pounds. They are healthy, with hip dysplasia being the only known concern. Most live to be 16 years old, and have large litters of 11 pups.
