American English Coonhound

Commonly referred to as the Redtick Coonhound, the American English Coonhound can be traced back to the Virginia hounds. Their name is derived from a combination of the American and English Foxhounds, and was originally bred to adapt to the American climate and diverse terrain, being used to hunt fox by day and raccoon by night.
This pleasant and confident breed is sociable with people and other dogs, making it a wonderful companion. They love children, but may be best suited for households with older children that are often times more considerate. Some of these hounds can be shy and perhaps timid, but all are very intelligent. Their kind expression and effortless gait gives them a striking appearance. Because they are highly devoted to their family, this breed makes an excellent guard dog, possessing a very hound-like bark that intimidates intruders. Maintenance requirements are considered low as the American English Coonhound has a short, hard and coarse coat that only needs minimal combing with a bristled brush. The harshness of their coat protects them from brush during the hunt and usually presents itself red and white ticked, but can be seen blue ticked as well. Their strong, muscular build is always well-proportioned, making them very fast and well-suited for hunting. When considering this particular breed for a pet, it is important to consider they are very active and high-strung and have a strong instinct to tree small animals. Many are somewhat aggressive towards other dogs. Because they are active when kept indoors, they are not recommended for apartment life. It is imperative that they have enough acreage to run and stretch, as this is a daily need. If they do not receive enough exercise they can become destructive to their surroundings. Generally, it is not a good practice to let them off of their leash anywhere they can not be contained. As for size, they usually weigh between 40-65 pounds and reach heights of between 21-26 inches. Litters usually contain between 12 and 14 pups; and interestingly enough, the pups can usually be seen both red and blue ticked. Having no known health concerns, they generally enjoy a life that spans 11-12 years.
