American Foxhound

american foxhound picture

George Washington can take much of the responsibility for the development of the American Foxhound. As a well-known hound lover, Washington carefully bred the hounds he had imported from England with some of the French hounds he had received as a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette; the result was the American Foxhound that is seen today.

Most experts believe this scent hound was originally used to track Indians, and later trained to hunt wild animals. Today, this lovable dog is the state animal of Virginia.

This breed is sweet and loyal, but quickly becomes uninterested in commands when on the trail of a scent during the hunt. The American Foxhound is excellent with children, and due to their pack mentality they get along great with other dogs; unfortunately, they can not be trusted with non-canine pets. Many get along famously with strangers, while others are more sedate; making some good watchdogs and others not up to the task.

This dog is generally not considered a great choice as an indoor pet, but is an ideal choice for a more rural setting. They love to run and play fetch, and need plenty of exercise to remain happy and healthy. New owners must remember that these dogs will be off in a flash after any scent that catches their fancy, making a fenced in yard a necessity. This dog loves to bay, and actually has a very pleasing sound. Some can be difficult to housetrain.

They have a narrow chest and long muzzle, and a short, rough coat that can be seen in any color. The American Foxhound is considered an average shedder, with minimal grooming needs; only need brushing with a firm bristled brush to maintain a proper coat sheen.

This hound stands 21 to 25 inches tall, and weights between 65 and 75 pounds. Although one must be careful not to overfeed this dog, this is a healthy breed that generally lives to age 13. Most litters have between 5 and 7 pups.
