Australian Bulldog

The Australian Bulldog, commonly referred to as the Aussie Bulldog in its native Australia, is the result of a curious breeding between a British Bulldog and a “pig hunting dog.” This dog is rare outside of Australia, but can occasionally be found in Guam, Tahiti and some areas of the United States.

This breed made its first appearance in the early 1990’s. The original breeders aimed to produce a dog with the typical bulldog appearance that also possessed a desirable personality and healthy nature.

This bulldog is loyal, affectionate and calm, and is known to require human companionship to thrive. The alert Australian Bulldog makes a good pet for children, especially enjoying participating in childhood games. Most get along pleasantly with other dogs, but some are prone to picking fights with dogs they are unfamiliar with. This breed is too friendly to be considered a serious guard dog.

This intelligent dog is easily trained, but should receive professional obedience training for the best results. This breed can be considered an inside dog, requiring minimal time outdoors for exercise. As with most bulldogs, they are sensitive to changing weather conditions, doing best in areas where they do not get too hot or too cold.

The Australian Bulldog has a thick build and is of medium stature, standing between 16 and 19 inches and weighing between 50 and 75 pounds. Most have fairly large heads that generally appear in proportion to their overall build. Their coat is tight to their body and appears short and smooth; showing, but not limited to, such colors as brindle, red, white & fawn, and pied. Pied is a term that simply means one coloring is more dominate than another, resulting in splashes of interesting patterns.

Considered an average shedder, the Australian Bulldog needs routine brushing for proper upkeep. It is important to wipe their face daily as their whiskers will become infected if not properly maintained.

This breed generally lives about 10 years.
