Australian Terrier

australian terrier picture

The Australian Terrier, like the Australian Shepherd, is affectionately referred to as the Aussie. This breed, one of the smallest working terriers, is most likely a combination of a variety of other terriers; such as the Dandie Dinmont, Yorkshire, and Norwich.

The Australian Terrier was originally used for a multitude of tasks, such as rodent control, watchdog duties, shepherding, and companionship. The AKC officially recognized this breed in 1960.

This energetic dog is quite affectionate, lovable and curious. Most have excellent hearing and extraordinary eyesight, making them excellent little watchdogs. While the Australian Terrier is considered highly intelligent, and easier to train than many other terrier type dogs, it is a breed that needs early, strict training. They are self-assured and very quick to make their own rules.

This courageous dog loves children, but can not tolerate being teased, so families with very young children may not be the best choice. Most get along quite nicely with other dogs and non-canine pets, but do like chasing small animals outside. Perhaps because of their protective nature, this dog is reserved with strangers, often seeming somewhat aloof. They do like to bark. They also loves to travel, making them an excellent companion for any trip.

Australian Terriers make excellent apartment dogs, not needing much exercise. But they do enjoy any time they are allowed outside to play. Most quickly adapt to any exercise routine. New owners must be sure to keep their Aussie on a leash unless they are in an enclosed area, because, as noted above, they have the tendency to chase anything that catches their eye.

The shaggy, weatherproof coat of this breed has a rough texture, and only needs brushing a couple of times a week to ensure proper maintenance. The coat can be seen in solids of red, or sand; or, can sometimes appear a silvery blue hue, with tan accents. This breed is very light shedder, but does require light trimming and nail clippings somewhat regularly.

The Australian Terrier is a small, feisty dog that stands between 9 and 11 inches, and weighs between 9 and 14 pounds. This breed is very healthy, generally living to reach at least the age of 15. Most have litters of 4 pups.
