Basset Hound

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound was bred to hunt, and with its keen sense of smell and great stamina, it is more than up to the task. But if you are thinking of owning this breed for a house pet, there are some pros and cons you should consider.

First the numerous pros. This breed is calm, great with children and just loves to be around people. As such, it is a great companion. It is somewhat humorous looking with the body of a dachshund and the face of a bloodhound. It also makes a good guard dog because it is so devoted to it’s master.

As for the cons…well some consider the dog lazy. However I think it’s just stubborn. First of all you must give the dog regular exercise or it will tend to eat and sleep excessively. They can also be difficult to housebreak or train. They learn well if you use food as a reward, but if the food isn’t present, often the obedience isn’t present either.

Bassets also tend to drool, so if you don’t like this, look elsewhere. Care is relatively easy, but they do tend to shed a lot. And the long ears should be cleaned regularly.

Bassets are typically 13-15 inches tall and 55-65 pounds.
