Beagle

Beagle Picture

The most recognizable Beagle is perhaps Snoopy, but this hound has existed since the reign of King Henry VIII, originally being used to hunt hare. United States president Lyndon B. Johnson had three of them as pets. This breed most likely originated from a cross between a Harrier and various other hounds in England.

Beagles make outstanding pets, as they possess loving dispositions and require little maintenance. Their weather-proof coat can be seen in a myriad of colors; including black, white, tan, red and mottled blue, requiring only light massaging for upkeep. One does need to make sure that their ears are regularly cleaned as they are prone to infection.

While they could never be described as obedient, they can be trained using formal instruction. Although they rarely show signs of aggression, they are better suited for families with children over five. These sweet hounds trust everyone, so they are not capable of protecting ones family or possessions.

Due to their hunting instinct, this breed can not usually be trusted with non-canine pets. They do make wonderful therapy dogs, especially with the elderly.

They are also the breed of choice for the USDA – where they are used to detect prohibited food items and sometimes narcotics being brought into the United States by travelers.

This inquisitive dog is a friendly pack animal that enjoys the company of other dogs as well as people. They are big chewers, especially when faced with separation from their family. When taken outside one must be aware that they are easily distracted by moving objects and unfamiliar scents, giving them the tendency to roam.

Although very active, Beagles are okay for apartments as long as they have the opportunity to take daily walks. They do tend to become obese if not properly exercised and are somewhat prone to congenital heart disease, epilepsy and some skin conditions.

They stand between 13 and 16 inches and usually weigh between 18 and 30 pounds. If they are well taken care of they can enjoy a life of between 12 and 13 years. This breed generally produces litters of between 2 and 14 pups.
