Bearded Collie

bearded collie picture

Often referred to as the Beardie, the shaggy Bearded Collie is a Scottish dog that is commonly thought to be the result of breeding between such dogs as the Polish Sheepdog, Komondor, and various sheep herding dogs found in the British Isles.

This sheep dog can claim to be one of the oldest breeds found in Great Britain; able to herd sheep and cattle during adverse weather conditions and over treacherous terrain. This breed is still a somewhat rare breed in the United States.

The Bearded Collie is a lively and playful dog, making them excellent companions for children. This dog is very affectionate and loves people; needing constant companionship to be truly happy. Although headstrong and self-confidant, they are easy to train.

Most experts feel that the male is more daring and outgoing, while the female is calmer and somewhat more submissive. Although fond of barking, they do not make good watchdogs.

The Bearded Collie is an active dog that is not well-suited for apartment life. This dog needs to have their own yard to roam, and actually prefers to be out of doors. Most are happy to sleep outside as well.

The coat of this dog generally goes through three stages of color; as pups they are generally black, blue, brown are fawn, and as they mature their coats darken considerably. During their later years, the coat fades again, ending up a shade between the two other coats.

This dog is an average shedder with significant grooming requirements. The long, shaggy coat of this sheep dog needs to be brushed daily, with special attention given to their eyes, ears and paws. Because of their thick undercoat they are susceptible to parasite infestation. Many owners choose to have their pet groomed professionally every couple of months.

The Bearded Collie is a medium-sized dog that stands between 20 and 22 inches, and weighs between 40 and 60 pounds. Although somewhat prone to hip dysplasia, this breed is considered healthy, living between 14 and 15 years. Most have litters of between 4 and 7 pups.
