Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound, used by Indians and scouts during the 1700’s, was the first coonhound to be considered a separate breed from the American Foxhound. This dog, a descendent of the Bloodhound, was historically used to hunt deer, mountain lion, and other big game. This working dog is an exceptional scent hound that is now used to trail and tree raccoons. In fact, this undeterred hunter is so persistent during the hunt that it is renowned for its ability to stay on track no matter how cold, or faint, a scent becomes. The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large, powerful and well-proportioned dog. They generally stand between 23 and 27 inches and weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. Their pendent ears and loose-fitting skin present a distinctive look not seen in other breeds. As the name implies, this dog is black with tan markings on the muzzle, chest and legs. This breed can be considered low maintenance, needing minimal brushing for coat care. Ear cleaning is the most important grooming requirement. This alert coonhound is a courageous, dedicated worker that can be willful. A patient handler and persistent training is a must, as these dogs possess just a hint of aggressiveness. They do, however, always obey their master. They are also intelligent, loyal and good natured. This dog does best with older children because of their tendency to become rough during play. Some are protective and most are reserved with strangers. Generally, they are somewhat aggressive with strange dogs. The Black & Tan has a propensity to drool, howl and slobber. The Black & Tan Coonhound does not make a good apartment dog. Because of their daily need for vigorous exercise they do require a large yard to remain fit and in good hunting form. Although hip dysplasia is of some concern, this breed is considered healthy, living between 10 and 12 years. Most litters produce between 7 and 8 pups.
