Border Collie

border collie picture

The Border Collie was originally referred to as the Scotch Sheep Dog, and the word “collie” is actually a Scottish dialect word used to refer to these dogs. Although their exact history is hard to trace, most experts believe this breed, as with all other sheepdogs, was bred to protect flocks from predators. Celtic clans used these dogs throughout the British Isles, and most derived their name from the area they were working. Today, the Border Collie is on of the few breeds that are virtually unchanged from its ancestors.

Most experts believe this breed is possibly the most trainable dog available today. This intelligent and responsive dog excels in obedience training and agility trials. They get along well with children and other dogs, although some are slightly dog aggressive towards dogs of the same sex. They can not be trusted with small, non-canine pets.

Because of their strong herding instinct, they have the tendency to become snappish and nip at the heels of unsuspecting people. Sometimes they are overly sensitive to loud noises or sudden movements. This dog makes an excellent companion, but is best suited for an experienced owner that can devote plenty of time and attention to their upbringing.

Because of their high energy level and incredible stamina, this dog is not recommended for apartment life, and is best suited to living on a large farm. They need room to roam and run free on a daily basis, even becoming unmanageable if they are not given regular tasks to perform.

The Border Collie is a well-balanced, athletic dog that is graceful and agile. They stand between 18 and 22 inches, and weigh between 27 and 45 pounds. Some of these dogs have coarse, thick hair, while others have finer, silkier coat. Both coat types can be seen black & white, red & white, black & gray, tri-color or totally black. Breed standards do not allow for and all white Border Collie. This dog is an average shedder that needs regular brushing for coat maintenance.

While some are allergic to flea bites and prone to hip dysplasia, they are a healthy breed that lives between 12 and 15 years. Most litters have between 4 and 8 pups.
