Boston Terrier

boston terrier picture

The Boston Terrier is one of the few native American dog breeds, hailing from Boston. This small terrier is a cross between the English Bulldog and now extinct White English Terrier. Although originally used for pit-fighting, today this pleasant dog shows almost no signs of their early aggressive nature.

With a gentle disposition and well-mannered nature, this breed makes an excellent family pet. This dog gets along famously with children, and makes a wonderful pet for the elderly. They are alert, intelligent, and easy to train, also possessing an unusually good sense of humor.

Most breed experts believe that males are more likely to bark than females, making them the better watch dog; but one must keep in mind that in general the Boston Terrier is quite friendly with strangers. Most get along fine with non-canine pets, but males may show aggression towards other dogs. Some may be difficult to house train.

This breed does fine living in an apartment. It does not like to exercise, but needs to be encouraged to be active to ensure good health. They are very fond of accompanying their owners on any excursion, and because of their size, are easy to carry.

The Boston Terrier is a small, muscular dog with a compact build, standing between 15 and 17 inches and weighing between 10 and 25 pounds. Their short, fine hair is seen in brindle & white or black & white, and they are considered average shedders. They are easy to groom, needing only regular brushing and a good wiping down for proper coat maintenance.

Special attention does need to be paid to their eyes and face, both needing cleaning daily. Because of the “bulldog” nature of their face, the Boston Terrier can develop breathing problems when exerted. They also have the tendency to snore and drool. Even with these special health concerns, this dog generally lives at least 15 years.

Because females of this breed have trouble whelping, most pups are delivered via caesarean section, with litters generally having between 3 and 4 pups.
