Boxer

The Boxer is a breed that can trace their ancestry back over one hundred years. This breed is a probable ancestor of two German mastiff-type dogs, and perhaps descended from ancient Tibetan fighting dogs. Boxers were originally used for bull baiting, pulling carts, and hunting. Today, they excel in police work, search and rescue, and military work. This breed is a high-spirited, and playful dog that gets along exceptionally well with children. They are curious and intelligent as well as stubborn and sneaky. Boxers need socialization at an early each, and need a dominate owner for proper training. Most are capable of getting along with other dogs and non-canine pets. Females tend to fight with other females. Both sexes make good watchdogs, quickly subduing an intruder. All love to protect their family and thrive on human companionship. This dog makes an excellent guard dog, but will welcome friendly visitors readily. Most owners report their pet is quite clownish, loving to play and grab at any item within their reach. The name “Boxer” is a reference to the way this fun dog reaches out towards people, food bowls and toys. All love to learn and perform tricks. This breed will be quite satisfied in an apartment, needing a small yard to play and daily walks to remain healthy. All love to jump and excel at competitive obedience training. The Boxer is a compact, muscular dog that stands between 21 and 25 inches, and weighs between 53 and 70 pounds. They are average shedders, and are considered very easy to groom. Many can be seen grooming themselves like a cat. Their shiny coat can be seen in brindle, white, and fawn and needs only weekly brushing for maintenance. This is a relatively healthy breed, with some tendency to develop tumors later in life as well as hip dysplasia and allergies. Most live between 11 and 14 years. Litters generally have between 2 and 10 pups.
