Brittany

The Brittany is a hunting dog that possesses outstanding gun dog skills. They are generally thought to be a cross between an Orange & White Setter, and an undetermined French breed. Most experts believe this dog hails from the Province of the same name in France. In some parts of the world this dog is referred to as the Brittany Spaniel, but the shorter version is officially used in the United States. The first concrete appearance of the this breed is seen in tapestries and paintings of the 17th century. The Brittany is a mindful dog that is always eager to please, but does require obedience training throughout their lives. They are intelligent, enthusiastic hunters and independent thinkers. This dog makes an excellent companion for children if socialized early, and generally gets along well with other pets. Most enjoy the company of strangers and do not make reliable guard dogs. Although most are very good natured, some can become nervous or hyperactive without proper training. All are easy to travel with and quite adaptable. This breed is an excellent hunting companion and all around, low maintenance pet. This hearty dog does not make a good apartment companion. As they love to roam and run, they are better suited for rural living; needing acreage to truly be content. They can make do in hot or cold climates. This breed especially skilled at hunting woodcock and partridge, either on land or in water. The Brittany is a leggy, medium sized dog that stands between 17 and 21 inches, and weighs between 30 and 40 pounds. All have a distinctive, clipped gait. Their flat coat is feathery, and needs regular brushing for proper maintenance. This breed is considered a light shedder. While the AKC and the Canadian Kennel Club do not permit black coats, it is an accepted color throughout the rest of the world. Other combinations include orange & white, liver & white, black & white, and tri-coloring. This breed is generally quite healthy, with some instances of dysplasia seen; most live between 10 and 12 years and produce litters with a single pup or as many as 11.
