Bulldog (English Bulldog)

The Bulldog is a descendent of the Asian Mastiff, but was developed solely in the British Isles. It should not be confused with the American Bulldog. The name “bull” is used as reference to this breeds original skill for bull baiting in arena combat during the early 19th century. Once a savage dog, this dog can now be considered one of the gentlest breeds. Both Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge had one as a pet, and many children recognize it from the famous movie, Lady and the Tramp.Although they make outstanding guard dogs, they are also excellent with children. This affectionate and loyal dog demands attention from people and generally gets along quite well with other animals. There are some that like to flex their muscle, and need a dominant owner to keep them under control. Those of this temperament often pick fights with strange dogs to assert their dominance. Most have a tendency to drool and slobber, as well as snore. This dog should be considered an inside dog and makes an excellent apartment dweller. Most are not interested in much exercise so they must be encouraged to take daily walks to maintain a proper weight. The English Bulldog can be seen in a variety of colors, including brindle, fawn, red and white. They are an average shedder, and their smooth, fine coat needs only regular brushing and wiping for proper maintenance. All require a daily face washing, especially the creases between their wrinkles. With their thick, massive head and wide, compact build, this breed has a distinct look. Although small in stature, standing between 12 and 16 inches, this dog generally weighs between 49 and 55 pounds. This breed does have its share of health problems. Due do a small windpipe, some have breathing problems, and most are very sensitive to both very hot or very cold temperatures. Many also face skin infections, vision concerns and hip and knee problems. Due to their large heads, pups are often delivered via caesarian section and have 3 or 4 littermates. Generally, they live around 8 years.
