Bullmastiff

bullmastiff picture

The Bullmastiff, or “night dog,” is part bulldog and part mastiff. It was originally bred to help protect game on large English estates; game that was usually quite enticing to poachers.

This dog was actually trained to tackle and hold poachers until their masters arrived on the scene, never using their teeth to harm trespassers. Although never trained to bite, this breed has been used in military service and even as a guard dog for the Diamond Society of South Africa.

The Bullmastiff can best be described as a contradiction of terms. They are powerful, yet agile; willful, yet good-natured; and protective, yet affectionate. This reliable breed is tolerant of children and reserved with strangers. They are generally aggressive towards other dogs.

Because of their power, a firm handler is recommended. This breed is more aggressive than the Mastiff, and should definitely be socialized and taught obedience from the earliest possible age. They do love attention from people, and quickly react to the tone of ones voice.

Striking an imposing figure, the Bullmastiff stands between 24 and 27 inches, and weighs between 100 and 130 pounds. Their rough coats are fawn, red or brindle and they all have black masking on their faces.

This dog is considered a very light shedder, and therefore low maintenance. They do need regular brushing and nail trimming.

While their large, handsome head and unique hazel eyes help present an intelligent expression, they do tend to slobber, drool and snore. Some are prone to cancer, lip boils and bloat.

Adequate exercise is needed to prevent weight gain. They can manage in an apartment, but need at least a small yard to stretch their legs.

This breed does not respond well to large fluctuations in temperature. They generally live to be around 10 years of age and the average litter contains 8 pups.
