Cardigan Welsh Corgi

cardigan welsh corgi picture

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was originally developed in Cardiganshire, Wales after being introduced to the area by the Celts. The name Corgi is actually a translation of the Celtic word for “dog.” As one of the earliest breeds seen in the British Isle, mentions of this dog in print date back as early as 1086. Most breed experts believe this dog can trace its ancestry to the Dachshund.

This Corgi has always excelled at cattle driving. This dog nips at the heels of cattle instead of herding them in the more traditional manner; often getting the job done quicker and more efficiently.

This intelligent dog is obedient and eager to please, and therefore easy to train. Their protective nature and love for barking make them excellent guard dogs. Most Cardigans are good with well-behaved children as well as non-canine pets. Many are aggressive with other dogs.

They get along fine in an apartment, but as they are very active most of the time they do require time outside to play.

The Cardigan generally weighs between 25 and 30 pounds, making it slightly heavier than the perhaps more well known Pembroke variety. They stand between 10 and 13 inches, making them a long, low-set dog. Their wiry double coat can be seen in a variety of colors; such as blue merle, brindle, black, black & tan and sable & red. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has minimal grooming needs, only requiring brushing to remove dead hair.

Although robust, this dog does have a tendency to become overweight which often results in joint problems. Most live between 12 and 15 years. The average litter size is 7, but a new owner should not be surprised with a much larger litter.
