Cockapoo
While still not a recognized breed, the Cockapoo is a mix between the Miniature Poodle and the American Cocker Spaniel. Although the coupling was initially accidental, the Cockapoo is now bred to produce other like dogs. These lovable dogs are not hyperactive, as many spaniels tend to be and are very observant, much like a poodle. Having a wonderful disposition, they are great with children, easy to train and generally accepting of other dogs. They are good apartment dogs, only requiring daily walks and opportunities to run and play in a small, enclosed area. They do prefer cooler climates. Being non-shedders, they are a wonderful choice for allergy sufferers. However, their thick, curly coat - seen in combinations of white, tan and cream - needs extensive grooming to prevent tangles and mats. They also have lower incidences of the genetic abnormalities that are seen in both the spaniel and poodle, affording them a long life span of almost 15 years. There have been occasions where some have reached the age of 22. This smart dog generally stands between 14 and 15 inches, but can be seen in sizes such as teacup (under 6 pounds), toy (under 12 pounds), mini (between 13 and 18 pounds) and maxi (over 19 pounds). Most breeders set the average weight at around 15 pounds.
