Dog Articles

This dog articles page was born from our Dog Blog. It's a way we can keep these articles online permanently, rather than have them pushed off as our blog gets too long. Of course, when an article is added (usually 5-6 per week) it will also show up on the blog.

So starting August 10, 2006, you will see a brief portion of all our new articles here, along with a link to the page where you can read the full article.

We'll try to mix it up a bit, everything from dog articles on training, psychology, care etc. Our newsletter subscribers tell me they prefer it when we mix up topics, so we'll try to do that here as well. Of course by subscribing to our newsletter you will be getting additional free information and dog articles not posted here. Subscribe by clicking on the Newsletter bar on the left.

As the page gets too large we will simply add more dog articles pages. We'll probably keep it to about 20 dog articles per page.

We hope you'll refer to this page frequently as we will try to keep it constantly updated. And if you subscribe to our blog feed (we hope you do), you will be notified every time new dog articles are added. That way you won't miss anything.

Also, if you have missed some of our previous blog entries, don't worry, we'll be covering some of those same topics again with more dog articles in the future.

Finally, as we continue to add more dog articles it may be difficult for you to find exactly what you are looking for. So we've added a Google search box to the end of this page. It will allow you to search this site to see if we've got the information you are needing.

Now, here are the dog articles.

How To Come Up With A Dog Name
Fido, Scruffy, and Spot just don't cut it anymore. A unique dog name is what most people are now after. Think about it, this is fun. You can name your pet something you would never consider naming your children.

Dog Safety - Pet Proof Your Home
You wouldn't think twice about baby-proofing you home when a newborn is expected. If you are interested at all in dog safety, the same thought should go into pet-proofing your house.

Expect Changes In Your Old Dog
If you don't feel as young as you used to, imagine how your old dog must feel. Our pets age faster than we do, so you can expect some changes as your dog begins aging.

Puppy Training - How To Prevent Jumping
The first step in this puppy training is to squat or kneel to greet your pet. Next, every time your puppy jumps on you, firmly take his paws off you you while saying "Off!" loudly and firmly.

Make Your Dog Pen A Happy Place
You would be amazed at how many dog owners describe their dog pen as a gravel or paved enclosure with a chain link fence. I would describe that as a prison not a play area. If your dog spends any time outside in a play area, you want to make his stay there pleasant.

Dog Training - Teaching Your Pet To Stop At Streets
We unfortunately found out the hard way just how important it is to include this little technique in your dog training. What we want to do is teach your pet not to cross the street without any verbal cue from you.

Dog And New Baby - Use A Careful Approach
A new baby in any household is a joyous occasion. But a dog and new baby can also be a stressful time for your pet. It won't be if you handle the situation properly.

Surviving The Puppy Stage - Birth To 9 Months
Perhaps the biggest challenge for any pet owner is getting through the puppy stage. Not knowing what to expect and the importance of each stage in the first 9 months can lead to frustration, especially if the puppy is not behaving the way he's expected.

The Dangers Of An Electric Dog Fence
Let me say right from the start that I am against the use of an electric dog fence. Here's my problem. Yes they will work in some instances, but the risk of injury or adverse behavioral side effects can be greater than the benefits.

Dog Training - Understand Your Dog's Hearing For Better Results
It's common knowledge that dogs hear a lot better than we people do. But did you know that his hearing can also play a role in how effective your dog training will be?

Dog Training - How To Protect Your Plants And Garden
All dogs like to start their own amatuer landscaping business. Unfortunately this will cause problems for your geraniums or vegetables. Even your houseplants are not safe. So this dog training lesson will simply be tips to keep your pet from turning into a lawn mower.

Dog Training - Teaching The "Enough" Command
While it may seem similar, "enough" is actually very different from "no". They need to be used differently so you don't confuse your pet. "No" should mean that whatever your pet is doing is forbidden at all times. "Enough" means what he is doing was OK, but now it is time to stop.

Dog Training - How To Stop Possessive Aggression
You've seen it happen with your new pet. He's laying on the floor happily chewing on his new rawhide. You playfully approach him, but instead of a playful response, your loving pet growls at you. This is possessive aggression, and you need to teach him that this is not OK.

Dog Training - How To Quiet Dog Whining
Any dog training must begin with an understanding of why the current action is occuring. In this case, whining is one of the earliest behaviors of puppies. It also is one of the more difficult behaviors to correct.

Older Dog Care - Frequently Asked Questions
As we have mentioned before, older dog care is quite different than caring for a young pup. Unfortunately, most people don't know how to properly care for their aging pet. Below are some of the frequently asked questions that we hear.

Older Dog Care - What Changes To Expect
Things change. It's a fact of life. And older dog care is different from caring for your young pup. If you don't feel as young as you did 10 years ago, imagine the difference in your pet over those same 10 years. It's no surprise therefore that an aging dog more adversely affected by, and less adaptable to stress and change.

Dog Pregnancy - What To Expect During And After
A normal dog pregnancy will last about 63 days, so if you know when she was bred, you should have a pretty good idea of when to expect the puppies. Some of the early signs of pregnancy include increased appetite, weight gain and increased breast size.

Dog Training - 3 Important Tips When Starting
I know we're going backwards from some of our previous dog training posts, but these 3 tips will make sure everything else you do will be more effective.

Dog Training - How Much and How Often
Your pet is usually ready for dog training whenver you are. But keep in mind his attention span is short. Training in short intervals of 5-7 minutes is great. If he seems to lose interest before then, stop.

Dog Training To Avoid Distractions
Here's a comment we hear pretty often. "My pet does great during dog training, but when he's out in public he no longer listens". There are several reasons for this.
