Dog Collars
Dog collars are often chosen to make a fashion statement, but if you're training a dog, more than fashion should come into play. There are two types of collars that should only be used specifically for training, chain collars and pinch collars. Both can be dangerous to your pet if not used properly, and we recommend they only be used by professionals. In most cases, proper training can be done without these types of collars. Otherwise, your best choices are leather collars and nylon collars. Leather collars are generally soft and can be flat or round. They are definately soft on your pet's neck. A general rule is the wider the collar, the more comfortable the fit. The round one is generally more likely to produce a hacking effect if you dog jumps ahead suddenly.

Nylon collars are typically very strong and used on most house pets. They are affordable, durable, and available in a wide range of colors and styles. They are perfect for hanging your dog's ID and vaccination record tags on.

It is also imperative that you fit the collar correctly. The rule of thumb (or fingers in this case) is that you should be able to slip two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck as the collar sits in the middle of the neck. One other thing to think about. Consider a harness if your pet has respiratory problems or has a disease of the throat or trachea. A harness will generally relieve any pressure in that area that the dog would feel when he pulls on a leash with a traditional collar.
