Dunker
The Dunker is the most popular scent hound in Norway, yet currently that are not very popular anywhere else. They are also commonly referred as the Norwegian Hound and were named after the man that first bred them, Wilhelm Dunker. This breed first appeared around the beginning of the 19th century. Most experts believe the breed is a result of a mixture between the Russian Harlequin Hound and another unnamed Scandinavian scent hound. This is a robust dog that is built for long distance running. Most are still quite capable of hunting hare. Their muscular build and endurance allows them to easily adapt to rugged terrain and a myriad of climates. They are even-tempered, making them terrific companions. They also intelligent and have a very strong work ethic. It is probably not well-suited for apartment living as it needs space to run. It is important they receive adequate exercise. This tri-colored dog has a harlequin, or blue marbled, coat and generally stands between 18 and 22 inches. Most weigh between 35 and 50 pounds. Some may be tan with a black saddle and small white markings. They have loose skin on their body and a short, thick, straight coat. The do require regular brushing but can be considered low maintenance.
