English Foxhound

The history of the English Foxhound can be traced back to England, as far back as the 13th century. Much stouter in appearance than the American Foxhound, this scent hound was exclusively used to foxhunt in the English tradition, which meant riding to hounds. This dog is the result of careful breeding between the Greyhound, Bulldog, and Fox Terrier. The English Foxhound is a pack dog, but if socialized from an early age they make gentle and affectionate pets for children. Most get along quite well with other animals, generally preferring the company of other dogs to people. Although this breed is very obedient and responsive to their master, they do require a patient trainer. The English Foxhound is a social, tolerant dog that is known for its stamina and good nose. One must remember this dog does like to bay, making them good watch dogs. However, they are not good guard dogs. Because of their very high energy level, they needs a great deal of exercise, and are not well-suited for apartment life. They love to run and can spend hours outdoors entertaining themselves. Most become very destructive if they feel confined in a small space. They should not be trusted off of their leash in an area that is not fenced. With their short, dense coat, this breed is considered an average shedder with low grooming requirements. Regular brushing will suffice. Their glossy coat is black, tan, and white, seen in tricolor or bicolor combinations. This dog stands between 23 and 27 inches and weighs between 55 and 75 pounds. They are very healthy dogs, with some instances of hip dysplasia being seen. Most live between 10 and 13 years and have litters of between 5 and 7 pups.
