English Pointer

english pointer picture

Most experts believe that English Pointers are the unlikely combination of the Foxhound, Greyhound, Bloodhound, English Bull Terrier, and Newfoundland. Pointers assisted hunters in pointing out game and generally can be traced back to the Falconer.

The name “pointer” refers to the motionless stance this breeds takes when hunted game has been found. The English Pointer is generally a land retriever with extraordinary scenting ability, but not well-suited for water work. They have been know to show pointing skills as early as 8 weeks of age.

This intelligent pointer is a kind, loyal and devoted dog. They are excellent companions for families with children, and somewhat reserved with strangers. This breed generally gets along well with other dogs, and is friendly with other non-canine family pets. Some socialization at an early age is necessary, to discourage timidity in adulthood. Although most English Pointers like to bark, it is generally for their own entertainment; therefore they can not be considered good watchdogs.

Perhaps the most important factor when considering the English Pointer for a pet is their need for exercise. They need vigorous exercise daily, becoming destructive and unmanageable if they are idle for too long. This dog is certainly not well-suited for apartment life and actually does best with acreage.

This breed is a graceful, muscular, gun dog with in aristocratic carriage. They stand between 21 and 24 inches, and weigh between 44 and 66 pounds.

Their sleek, shiny coat is generally white, but can also be seen in liver, lemon, black or orange. Some are solid in color while others are speckled. This dog is an average shedder with low grooming needs, requiring only regular brushing and occasional wiping off with a soft cloth for sufficient coat maintenance.

Although this dog is prone to hip dysplasia and some skin conditions, they are generally healthy, living between 13 and 14 years. Litters can have anywhere from 1 to 10 pups, but generally average 6.
