English Setter

english setter picture

The English Setter is a bird and gun dog that first appeared in Great Britain over 400 years ago. Most experts believe this setter is a combination of the large Water Spaniel, Spanish Pointer, and Springer Spaniel. This hunting dog has the distinct ability to point and find game in open country. Most people mistakenly believe the English, Gordon, and Irish Setter are representations of the various colors seen in setters, when, in fact, all three are distinct breeds.

The English Setter is a sweet dog that is great with children. They are intelligent and easy to train, but do often have a mind of their own. Obedience training from an early age is extremely important, as this dog quickly learns bad habits.

This setter is lively and quite social, making them unsuitable for guard or watch dog duties. Most get along fine with other dogs and non-canine household pets. This breed loves attention, and can be considered somewhat sensitive. Some drool and are hard to housebreak. All English Setters like to bark, and can be quite annoying; but can be trained to bark only when absolutely necessary.

The English Setter is an active dog that is not well-suited for apartment living, needing at least an average sized year and long daily walks to maintain health. They do like to wander, so it is important to have a fenced in area for them to play. Most like to dig and are quite agile jumpers.

The coat of the English Setter is uniquely speckled; generally seen white with lemon, orange or brown speckling. Their eyes are generally hazel, affording them a sweet, lovable expression. They are average shedders, and their flat, soft coat only needs regular grooming for maintenance. Their nails need regular clipping and the hair on their feet, regular trimming. It is also important to occasionally check for mats and burrs that may be hidden from view.

This dog is glamorous and symmetrical, standing between 23 and 27 inches, and weighing between 45 and 80 pounds. This dog is prone to bloat, so great care must be taken to avoid over feeding. Some instances of hip dysplasia are seen, but this dog does live between 10 and 12 years. Most litters produce 6 pups.
