Field Spaniel

The Field Spaniel, was introduced in America in the 1880’s, yet not recognized as a separate breed until the 20th century. Up until that time this spaniel was grouped with the more widely recognized Cocker Spaniel. Still somewhat rare in the United States, this bird dog can trace its roots to the previously mentioned Cocker. This active and friendly dog is always eager to please; getting along exceptionally well with children and enjoying the company of other like dogs. They are generally cautious with strangers. The Field Spaniel is a barker, but their mild-mannered temperament makes them an unreliable guard dog. Unlike other spaniels, this breed is very level-headed. Their almond shaped eyes allude to this character trait, allowing them a very noble and mischievous expression. They are very bright, easily getting into trouble if they are left unattended for large periods of time. Most enjoy carrying things in their mouth. The Field Spaniel is not well-suited for apartment living and is happiest having a large yard. Although they do okay with long walks for exercise, they prefer to run and explore. They are best-suited for an active family and love to travel. Being larger and bigger boned than dogs of similar breeds, they are built for activity; yet they are actually quite docile. One unique feature is the webbing of their feet. This bred loves the water and can generally make even their water bowls appear entertaining. The Field Spaniel, a seasonal shedder, needs little grooming; requiring only regular brushing once or twice a week. It is important to trim the feathering on their tails and ears as well as keep their ears cleaned. Their silky coat is always a solid color, either liver or black. This gun dog stands around 18 inches and weighs between 30 and 50 pounds. As with other dogs their size, they are prone to hip dysplasia and ear infections. They do generally live between 10 and 12 years and have litters containing 8 pups.
