French Bulldog

french bulldog picture

The French Bulldog was developed in England as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. After being imported to France during the industrial revolution by Nottingham lace workers that left England seeking work, they were bred with French Terriers. Logically, the new bred was renamed.

This breed is pleasant, playful and affectionate, yet willful at times. They have a much-deserved reputation for being clowns, as they love to play and joke around with anyone willing to join them.

They are a curious breed that requires constant companionship. This bulldog generally prefers the company of children over 4; but does get along well with other animals. One must consider that the French Bulldog tends to bond with one family member more than others. Most readily accept strangers, but are enthusiastic and protective enough to make good watch dogs.

The Frenchie prefers cooler climates, being somewhat sensitive to heat. They are okay living in an apartment and do not require a yard of their own. They do love to run and play and need time outside daily in order to remain healthy.

Some of their more distinctive features include bat-like ears, a pug nose and half domed skull. This dog generally stands, on average, 12 inches. They usually weigh between 19 and 28 pounds. The French Bulldog has a short, soft coat that is very easy to care for; requiring minimal brushing weekly to remove dead hair. Most coats are brindle, fawn and white, or combinations of the three.

Some dogs of this variety tend to drool and slobber and many have breathing problems causing them to wheeze and snore. Additionally, the French Bulldog is prone to eye problems. One should consider that this breed has the potential to incur large medical bills, but with careful attention can live to be 12 years of age.

Females tend to have a hard time giving birth, as most pups have fairly large heads. Litter size is generally 4.
