German Shorthaired Pointer

The German Shorthaired Pointer is an all-purpose gun dog that is probably descended from the German Bird Dog. Originally, with its excellent scenting ability, this dog was bred to hunt game such as grouse, waterfowl, raccoon, quail, and deer. They are especially proficient in sporting events such as retrieving, pointing, and trailing. This pointer is an intelligent, cheerful, friendly dog that gets along quite well with children. They are somewhat reserved with strangers. Most are okay with other dogs and most cats, but do need to be socialized early. They are considered a barking breed. The most important aspect of having this dog as a pet is the exercise routine; they make excellent pets if exercised regularly, even as much as twice per day. The German Shorthaired Pointer loves being part of the family. Males tend to make more aggressive hunters, although both sexes are skilled hunting dogs. They are easy to train and make wonderful guard dogs. This dog is not well-suited for apartment life, and is at its best with a family that enjoys athletic activities. Daily vigorous exercise is needed to maintain proper health, both physically and mentally. This dog becomes quite mischievous when bored, and has the uncanny ability to escape from seemingly escape-proof yards. Most fences need to be at least 6 foot high to contain a German Shorthair. This dog is an average shedder, with minimal grooming needs. Most only require regular brushing or wiping with a cloth for proper maintenance. The short, sleek coat of this dog is always solid liver, or liver & white; in either a ticked, patched, or roan pattern. In accordance with breed standards, other colors are not allowed. The German Shorthaired Pointer is an elegant dog with well-balanced features. They stand between 21 and 25 inches, and weigh between 45 and 70 pounds. The chiseled look of their head gives them a clean-cut, intelligent appearance. The German Shorthaired Pointer is a healthy breed, with some instances of epilepsy seen. Most live between 12 and 15 years. This breed generally produces 8 pups with each litter.
