German Wirehaired Pointer

The German Wirehaired Pointer is the result of the demand by German hunters for a rugged pointing dog that was able to withstand harsh weather and rugged terrain; one that also quickly adapted to various game. This breed is an excellent scent dog that excels in tracking, pointing, and retrieving, both on land and in water. The coat of the German Wirehaired Pointer is perhaps their most unique feature. It is generally around two inches in length, and is seen liver & white, spotted, ticked or roan. Wiry and coarse, the coat is weather resistant, and to some extent, even weather-repellent. This breed is an average shedder that needs conscientious brushing at least twice per week. Their ears also require extra attention, needing weekly cleaning to prevent serious infection. The face of this enthusiastic pointer is surrounded by a beard, whiskers and forehead hair; all features that originally served as protection during particularly rigorous hunting trips. The German Wirehaired Pointer is affectionate and intelligent, yet willful at times. This is a breed that requires a handler that is consistent with training. Because they are extremely affectionate and protective of their master, this dog is perhaps better suited as a companion for older children; they may become somewhat aggressive when jealous. It is also recommended that socialization start as early as possible with the German Wirehaired, to ensure the development of appropriate social skills. They are good watch dogs. Most are somewhat friendly with people they recognize, but are quite snobby towards strangers. This breed gets along fine with other dogs and household pets, but some are more interested in showing their dominance around strange dogs than being obedient. An apartment is not an appropriate setting for the German Wirehaired Pointer as they are generally very high strung, requiring a large amount of space to exercise. They love to retrieve and swim, and will participate in almost any outdoor activity. The German Wirehaired Pointers is best suited for a very active family. This well muscled, medium sized dog stands between 22 and 26 inches, and weighs between 60 and 70 pounds. This is generally a healthy breed, with instances of hip dysplasia, skin cancers and ear infections being of most concern. Most live between 12 and 14 years and females usually have 6 to 10 pups per litter.
