Great Pyrenees /Pyrenean Mountain Dog

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is more commonly referred to as the Great Pyrenees in the United States. This large working dog served as a companion to the indigenous Basque people of the Pyrenees Mountains in Southern France, originally arriving from the mountainous areas of Central Asia. They were used as companions and to guard the flocks from large predators such as wolves or bear. Many are still used today to guard livestock. During the 17th century, this dog became the official dog of the French royal court. The courageous Great Pyrenees is an intelligent and independent dog that needs socialization and a patient trainer from an early age. This devoted and obedient dog is great with children, but does do best when raised with them from the beginning. Because of their size they should never be left unattended with small children of any age. They are wary of strangers, and males may show aggression towards other dogs. As a whole, they are generally good with non-canine pets, especially enjoying the company of cats. Most tend to bark a great deal and some tend to drool and slobber excessively. Many are stubborn. Again, because of their size, the Great Pyrenees is not well-suited for apartment life. They do need regular exercise to maintain the proper weight, and a medium-sized yard will generally suffice. This breed prefers cooler climates. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog is a giant dog, standing between 25 and 35 inches, and weighing between 85 and 135 pounds. This strong, powerful dog has a weather resistant, wiry overcoat, and a thin, soft undercoat. Most Great Pyrenees are white, but some have splotches of gray or tan around their eyes and face. This breed is considered an above average shedder that sheds heavily once a year. They require regular brushing on a daily basis to remove dead hair, and bathing only when necessary. While prone to hip dysplasia, this dog is generally healthy, living between 9 and 15 years. On average, most litters have 9 pups.
