Lowchen

The Lowchen, whose name means “Little Lion Dog,” has a history that can be documented as far back as the 1500’s. It is possible this breed is originally German, but most breed experts believe it most likely hails from the Mediterranean. While not yet popular in the United States, the it remains a very popular breed in Spain, Italy, France and Germany. The famous artist Goya featured this breed in many of his paintings. The Lowchen is cheerful, lively and affectionate. They are intelligent and sociable and always eager to learn; making them very easy to train. This breed is good with children and okay with other dogs and non-canine pets. Most are strong-willed and some have the reputation for being arrogant. This breed also likes to bark and has the compulsion to dig. They make wonderful apartment dogs, not needing their own space out of doors. While most are eager for a daily walk, they are adaptable to any change in routine. This is a long, wavy haired dog, usually seen in white, black, lemon or speckled. Although a light shedder, the coat of this breed does need to be combed, brushed and clipped on a regular basis in order to prevent the build-up of dead hair. This breed is considered an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. Most stand between 10 and 13 inches and weigh between 9 and 18 pounds. Generally healthy, they do have the knee cap issues of similar dogs their size. They generally live between 12 and 14 years.
