Puppy Training - How To Prevent Jumping
The main thing to remember in any puppy training is to be consistant with your commands. It's one command for one action. This is the biggest mistake people make.Let's apply this to jumping. Your puppy may already know the command "down". It means he should lie down with his belly to the floor and that's not what we want to accomplish when teaching our puppy not to jump. For this you need a seperate command. We use "off". Remember one command for one action. First let's look at why your puppy is jumping. Consider this - have you ever tried to greet someone you love while looking into his or her ankles? My guess is you much prefer looking into his or her face. That's true with your puppy also. He wants to see you. So the first step in this puppy training is to squat or kneel to greet your pet. That's an important beginning. Next, every time your puppy jumps on you, firmly take his paws off you you while saying "Off!" loudly and firmly. This coupled with you bending over is all you'll really need for a young puppy. There's no need for any rougher methods. Just be sure to pat him praise him as soon as all four feet are planted on the floor. Praise must always follow any attempt by the pup to do what is demanded. This is true even if the attempt is somewhat casual and not exactly what you had in mind as complete compliance. He'll get there with consistancy on your part. The technique is somewhat different with an older and perhaps more stubborn dog. After all, he's been running things his way until now. You'll need to be a little more forceful. Possibly lifting your knee to your chest when he approaches while at the same time saying firmly "Off!". Do it every time, being careful not to hurt your pet. He'll eventually understand if you're consistant.
